What is it?
Two people who have different skills and strengths agree to meet, perhaps once a month, to support and reflect honestly on what they are doing.

What is needed?
Trust
Honesty
Discretion
Clarity about what each person wants from the arrangement and what each is able to give.

Personally I wanted a detached view of my business projects, support and even nagging to charge realistically, my failings pointed out and also my strengths.

I offered my marketing skills and support in the areas that my co-mentor wanted.

It can be scary and uncomfortable to have one's failings pointed out, but this transaction is so equal that it feels just fine, especially with support to make changes.

This is a tool that has already made a great difference to my business and I can't reccomend it enough.

Perhaps the business networking clubs members could look about them for potential co-mentors in the clubs?

Please let me know your experiences of co-mentoring and any thoughts you may have.

Re: I have just discovered for myself the benfits of co-mentoring

I certainly agree, mentoring can be extreamly valuable for all businesses.

Of course finding the right person to jointly mentor with is the biggest challenge but the benefits are certainly worth it. We have found value in mentoring on either a specific project on business in general.

With the general marketplace still quite challenging I think this is something that the clubs members could work together on setting up.

Re: I have just discovered for myself the benfits of co-mentoring

I could talk for a long time about what to call it (co-mentoring, mentoring, coaching etc etc.), but the important point is exactly as you mentioned here. The objective view from a third party is invaluable and can really help to boost performance. The more somebody is trained to listen, analyse, and help develop your thoughts in line with great business building experience the better; but third party objectivity can't be beaten. This is one of the reasons that big PLC's have non executive Directors, and this benefit is available to all of us.

Trust, clarity, and honesty are all important. I'd probably replace discretion with confidentiality and there has to be some rapport between you. But it's really hard to be as objective when you look at yourself, I look forward to hearing how it goes.
